Albany Parks & Recreation

We are excited to announce what we are able to open in Phase II. Playgrounds OPEN Thursday, June 18. Park Maintenance staff has been quickly inspecting each playground for safety and getting them cleaned up. Please wait until Thursday, June 18 to play as our staff needs a little more time to make sure everything is safe for kiddos! Our staff greatly appreciates it! When Phases open we don't receive all the information on Recreation guidelines until later. We just received guidance on playgrounds on Tuesday. The guidance are the rules we must follow in order to open something. We still are in fact waiting for more guidelines for Phase II for other activities and programs. This causes a bit of a delay from when we are able to open up amenities. We know you are all ready to go but we need to follow Oregon Health Authority guidelines and at times we have to wait to receive them. We appreciate the understanding, we are all going through this together, and learning as we go. We will have more guidance on Cool! Pool in the coming weeks, stay tuned for that!

Greater Albany Public Schools

Dear Greater Albany Public Schools Students and Families,

Late Monday night, the Oregon Department of Education released new guidance for providing education during the COVID-19 pandemic. The directive is to shift from providing supplementary education to a formidable effort to provide “Distance Learning for All”.

According to the ODE release, Distance Learning for All will be a process for students to receive ongoing interaction with their teacher. Distance learning is not just online instruction, as it provides for blended learning strategies and access to appropriate educational materials through multiple modes of communication. As schools transition to distance learning, successful approaches will be centered on care, community and continuity of learning. Districts are directed to have their Distance Learning for All plan in place by April 13, 2020.

While this is a shift from earlier directives, Greater Albany Public Schools has been building its remote learning platforms and is prepared to adjust to this path. Our Remote Education Resources page will go live on Wednesday, April 1, and will contain detailed lesson plans with daily schedules and structures for students. We have also mailed workbooks to K-8 students and our team will continue building the platform as we work through the new guidelines.

We remain confident that all seniors who are on track to graduate will be able to do so and all students will be able to advance grades. While the ODE stated there is a strong possibility that our students may not come back through our school house doors this academic year, the current closure officially remains through April 28.

We will continue to provide many services to support our community, including:

- Free breakfast and lunch for all children age 1-18 at 17 different locations every weekday. Locations and times are available at bit.ly/GAPSMeals.

- Issuing chromebooks for students in need of technology, starting with grades 9-12 and moving to younger students as need and supply are assessed. Please submit a request form at bit.ly/GAPSTechRequest.

- Providing child care for essential health care workers, as identified in Governor Brown’s Executive Order, beginning April 1.

- Calls home from teachers to every student and consistent communication on school messenger, the district website, and social media to help strengthen relationships.

I addressed our service to students and community, our next steps given the new information, and answered community questions in a Facebook live stream on Tuesday. The video is archived on our district page.

Thank you again for your continued support as we continue to build bridges to lifelong learning and brighter futures during this challenging time. Please prioritize the social, emotional, and physical well being of yourself and your students as we move forward together.

Sincerely,

Melissa

Atentamente,

Melissa
