Daniel Winkler I am happily married and lucky to be raising two fantastic kids! I love to coach youth sports, having coached Pop Warner, Soccer and Basketball. I am learning how to fly an airplane, and I love great food and wine!

When I was 14, I got my first job working in the restaurant business as a dishwasher, busboy, waiter, bartender and then Maitre’d. I eventually opened up my first restaurant, which I owned and operated from 20 to 25 years old. As fate would have it, a real estate developer intrigued with such a young entrepreneur was the first customer in the door the day I opened on September 17, 1984...and the rest is as they say, history. I sold the restaurant in December of 1989, and asked Harvey for a job in real estate, that I had to try something other than food service, and he gave me a job as the receptionist for the office. About three months into the new job, I was trained for the sales side of the business. Shortly thereafter I got my real estate sales license, and was moved to Sacramento to work on a high end custom lot and home subdivision in El Dorado hills. For the next 5 years I worked on two more huge condominium development projects in San Jose and Albany. Then, in 1999 Harvey told me he was going to transition to entitlement deals, and that they would not be needing a sales team, and that I should decide what I wanted to do. After thinking about it for a moment, I decided to open my own brokerage in 2000 which was incorporated in 2001 as Daniel Winkler and Associates, Inc. This company was established to be strictly client centric, and collegial in environment. I wanted to take care of the client above all else, and I wanted the team to work together, not as competitors. This has now become Winkler Real Estate Group, with over $300,000,000 in sales in 2016 and 2017!

As Bay Area rents soar, many can’t keep up

Just a thought. Many of my friends know I am fairly active in drawing attention to our state budget surplus, and what I saw as the “hidden from view” aspect of the surplus. I first read about our California State Surplus in a New York Times article about Jerry Brown. I like Jerry, he is very smart, and has done an excellent job as Governor and as Mayor of Oakland. I credit his leadership and decisions with setting Oakland on the path it always deserved.

However, this surplus bothered me a lot. Not because I am complaining about taxes, heck, they got the money already, I am not looking for it back. I was upset because what family would let someone sleep under a highway when you have $6 BILLION dollars in the bank. I think we would all want to reach out and help these people. I do not believe they “want” to sleep under the highway, and I do not see this as a lifestyle.

So we have this surplus, and I have been asking my friends: “Hey do you know if California has a surplus?” And you would be surprised at the answers, many, many did not know.

In addition, the article said that the surplus could grow to $11 billion this year, and now I am hearing $13 Billion….that is Billion with a B.

I have asked, would it hurt to take $2 BILLION and do something to help these people? Is it really that hard? Or do the politicians drool over these funds to pay for greater public employee salaries and benefits, pet projects, things that might be fun and fine….but do nothing to help those most in need.

This article seems to shed some light on this….and it looks like Sacramento is waking up a bit…but I ask, why did it take so long? This surplus did not show up from one day to the next…it grew, over time…and we should have and must be ahead of this sort of thing in my view.

I hope this gets to the people that need it, I hope we build affordable housing, and I hope we build the needed facilities for both physical and mental health we clearly need.
