Some of the Douro’s treasures are not found in a cellar.
They are scattered along old paths, vineyards and hillsides around Armamar — pieces of quartz, bright stones and fragments of the land that have been part of local life for generations.
In the villages, what we might call crystals are often simply white stones, quartz or calhaus. Locals have long picked them up while walking or working the land, using them to decorate flower pots, garden paths and old walls, where their brightness contrasts with the dark schist of the Douro.
For many, looking for beautiful stones is also a childhood memory: walking through the countryside, searching the ground for the brightest, clearest pieces and calling them little village “diamonds”.
After rain or when the earth has been turned, the landscape reveals even more.
At Pintahouse, we invite you to experience the Douro at this slower pace — walking through the land, looking a little closer and discovering what has been there all along.
