Apparently, we’ve been making our beds all wrong.

Interior stylist Loui Burke has some fairly strong opinions on the subject — particularly when it comes to the increasingly elaborate arrangements of cushions we seem to think a bed requires.

His approach? Less fuss, better layering and a little more attention to proportion.

Think sleeping pillows stacked flat, two European pillows, one long lumbar cushion, a generous duvet, natural fabrics and — perhaps most importantly — a good steam.

His biggest rule is simple: your bed should look beautifully made, but still look like you’re actually allowed to get into it.

And thankfully, you don’t need expensive linen to achieve the look. According to Burke, scale and presentation can make inexpensive bedding feel considerably more luxurious.

One thing he’d happily see disappear in 2026? The excessive cushion collection — and the dreaded “cushion chop”
A beautifully made bed doesn’t need to shout. Sometimes, restraint is what makes a bedroom feel truly considered.

Is the beige era finally over?

According to Dulux, 2027 is set to bring a lot more personality back into our homes.
