I had an interesting conversation with an older colleague recently.

While describing a location, he confidently said, “It’s approximately 1,000 kilometres away.”

I paused for a second. As someone from the newer generation, I couldn’t instantly picture that distance. But I admired how naturally it came to him.

It made me realize something about the older generation. They were taught through highly practical systems of education, many under British-trained teachers. Their learning wasn’t just about passing exams, it was about understanding, estimating, measuring, and communicating with precision.

That foundation gave them an incredible edge. They could analyze situations in real time, communicate more clearly, and describe the world in ways that were both practical and accurate.

It reminded me that measurements aren’t just numbers, they’re a language. And when we understand the metric system, communication becomes clearer, decisions become smarter, and life simply makes more sense.
