What will you do if you were Adaeze?
Adaeze was a brilliant young Nigerian girl from a modest family in Enugu. While in secondary school, she fell deeply in love with Chinedu, a handsome and ambitious young man whose dream was to become a successful Engineer.
When they both gained admission to university, Adaeze made a promise to herself: “I will do everything I can to make sure Chinedu graduates. One day, he will marry me.”
Chinedu struggled financially. His parents could barely afford his school fees, textbooks, accommodation, and feeding. Adaeze, however, sacrificed almost everything she had.
She used her savings to pay some of his school fees. She bought him textbooks, sent him money for food, and even took part-time jobs to support him. Whenever Chinedu wanted to give up, Adaeze encouraged him.
“Don't worry, my love,” she would tell him. “One day, we will look back at these difficult days and laugh. When you graduate, we will get married and build our own home.”
Chinedu always promised her.
“After everything you've done for me, how could I ever forget you? You are my future wife.”
Years passed.
Eventually, Chinedu graduated and got a good job in Lagos. His life changed quickly. He began earning good money, dressing differently and moving with wealthy friends.
Adaeze expected him to return home and fulfill his promise.
Instead, Chinedu became distant.
Her calls became unanswered. Her messages were ignored.
Then one afternoon, Adaeze received shocking news.
Chinedu was getting married.
She couldn't believe it.
She rushed to confirm the information, only to discover something even more painful.
Chinedu was marrying her younger sister, Amarachi.
Adaeze was completely devastated.
When she confronted him, Chinedu simply said:
“Adaeze, things have changed. I don't love you anymore. Amarachi is the woman I want to marry.”
Adaeze stared at him in disbelief.
“But Chinedu, I sacrificed everything for you. I paid your school fees. I fed you. I supported you when nobody believed in you. You promised you would marry me.”
Chinedu looked away.
“I'm sorry. But I never asked you to do all those things.”
Those words broke her heart.
Even worse, Amarachi knew everything. She knew her elder sister had sacrificed for Chinedu, yet she still accepted his proposal.
“Sometimes we give someone the ladder to climb, only to discover that he/she was climbing toward someone else.”
