GOA CHITRA โค๏ธ | WHERE CURIOSITY MEETS HERITAGE

19.10.2026 | A MORNING OF DISCOVERY AND NOSTALGIA

The day began on a wonderful note at the Goa Chitra Conglomerate of Museums, Benaulim, with an enthusiastic group of 161 students and 11 teachers from Our Lady of Candelaria High School, Baina, Vasco da Gama.

The students were warmly welcomed and briefed by our Founder-Curator, Victor Hugo Gomes, followed by an intensive guided tour through our museum collections.

There is something truly beautiful about introducing young minds to their cultural heritage. โค๏ธ

For children, every object becomes a question, every tool a mystery, and every artefact a doorway to another world. Their curiosity brings our collections alive in the most wonderful ways.

And for their teachers and parents, many of these objects evoke memories of a childhood and a way of life that once was โ€” making the visit an experience of rediscovery, nostalgia and shared learning.

At Goa Chitra, our 40,000+ artefacts are not merely objects preserved behind museum walls. They are storytellers connecting generations, keeping traditions alive and helping young people understand the ingenuity, wisdom and resourcefulness of their ancestors.

Every school visit reaffirms our belief that heritage education is essential to shaping a generation that values its roots.

Our heartfelt thanks to the management, teachers and students of Our Lady of Candelaria High School for making the morning so special.

WHEN THE WORLD COMES TO GOA, LET THEM EXPERIENCE THE REAL GOA ๐ŸŒด๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ

GOA CHITRA โ€” WHERE GOAN HERITAGE COMES ALIVE

On 8th October 2026, the Goa Chitra Conglomerate of Museums welcomed 30 tourism officials from 17 countries participating in a two-week programme under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) initiative of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India.

Conducted through the Goa Institute of Management (GIM), the programme aims to familiarise international tourism officials with diverse tourism models, policies and practices, enabling them to adapt and strengthen initiatives in their own countries. The cultural experience was curated in collaboration with independent facilitators Puja and Anabel.

The participants were welcomed by Goa Chitra's Founder and Curator, Victor Hugo Gomes, before embarking on an immersive guided tour of all three museums โ€” Goa Chitra, Goa Chakra and Goa Cruthi.

Through thousands of artefacts relating to agriculture, fishing, transportation, traditional homes, crafts, foodways and everyday life, the visitors discovered Goa's rich cultural history and the ingenuity of its people.

An interactive session with Victor Hugo Gomes explored Goan traditions, heritage conservation and the importance of preserving cultural memory in a rapidly changing world.

For international tourism professionals, the visit offered a valuable perspective on how living heritage, traditional knowledge and community identity can enrich tourism beyond conventional attractions.

AND THEN CAME THE TASTE OF GOA!

Geraldine Fernandes and her family served a traditional Goan feast featuring boiled rice, prawn curry, kingfish fry, green gourd caldeen, radish vegetable, prawn rawa fry, kismoor, chicken xacutti, tossed salad, sol kadhi and the traditional dessert, vonn.

Because a culture cannot be understood through artefacts alone. It must also be experienced through its food, stories, traditions and people.

Goa Chitra continues to serve as a living cultural classroom, connecting visitors from across India and the world with Goa's tangible and intangible heritage. Its approach demonstrates how museums can foster cultural exchange, deepen understanding and contribute to more meaningful and responsible tourism.

FOR THOSE WHO COME TO GOA, THE MESSAGE IS SIMPLE:

DON'T JUST SEE GOA. UNDERSTAND GOA.

๐ŸŒฟ Walk through its history.
๐ŸŒฟ Discover the ingenuity of its people.
๐ŸŒฟ Experience its traditions.
๐ŸŒฟ Listen to its stories.
๐ŸŒฟ Taste its food.

Discover the Goa that exists beyond beaches, nightlife and postcards.

GOA CHITRA โ€” A MUST-VISIT DESTINATION FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO KNOW THE REAL GOA. ๐ŸŒดโค๏ธ

WHEN A MUSEUM BECOMES A CLASSROOM

On 6th October 2026, Goa Chitra had the pleasure of welcoming 20 students and 2 faculty members from Rosary College, Navelim.

What followed was much more than a museum visit. The students embarked on an immersive guided journey through all three museums of Goa Chitra โ€” Goa Chitra, Goa Chakra and Goa Cruthi โ€” discovering the extraordinary knowledge, skills, traditions and ingenuity that once shaped everyday Goan life.

LEARNING IS NOT CONFINED TO FOUR WALLS

For me, a museum should never be a silent building filled with old objects. It should be a place where young minds can see, touch, question, listen, understand and connect with the world that existed before them.

At Goa Chitra, every object has a story. A farming implement speaks about our relationship with the land. A traditional tool speaks about craftsmanship. A household object tells us about everyday life. A mode of transportation tells us how people travelled and connected. Together, these objects tell the larger story of Goa and its people.

FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE REAL WORLD

After their guided tour, the students had an opportunity to interact with me as the founder and curator of Goa Chitra, and we spoke about the collection, the importance of preserving our heritage and the responsibility that young people will inherit as the next custodians of Goa.

These conversations are perhaps as important as the objects themselves.

Because if our children grow up knowing only what is modern and convenient, but remain disconnected from the knowledge and wisdom of their ancestors, we lose much more than objects โ€” we lose a part of who we are.

KEEPING HERITAGE ALIVE

For more than two decades, I have believed that Goa Chitra must be an extension of the classroom โ€” a place where education becomes experiential and where our young people can discover Goa through its material culture.

The greatest reward for a museum founder is not simply seeing visitors walk through the galleries. It is seeing young minds becoming curious about their own heritage.

Thank you to Rosary College, Navelim, the students and faculty for spending time with us.

THE FUTURE OF GOA'S HERITAGE WILL DEPEND ON WHAT WE TEACH OUR CHILDREN TODAY.

WORLD TOURISM DAY 2026 | THE FUTURE OF TOURISM

The tourism industry is entering a new era.

Artificial Intelligence. Digital experiences. Virtual discovery. Personalised travel.

But perhaps the most important question is not HOW TECHNOLOGY WILL CHANGE TOURISM.

It is:

WHAT WILL WE SHOW THE WORLD?

At Goa Chitra, we believe the future of tourism must be built on the strength of Goa's cultural identity.

Let technology help visitors discover us.

Let innovation help us reach new audiences.

But let our HERITAGE, OUR PEOPLE, OUR STORIES AND OUR LIVING CULTURE remain at the heart of the experience.

Because the world doesn't travel thousands of kilometres simply to see another destination.

IT TRAVELS TO EXPERIENCE SOMEWHERE DIFFERENT.

And Goa's greatest tourism asset is not something we can manufacture.

IT IS GOA ITSELF.

WORLD TOURISM DAY 2026 | THE GOA THAT IS DISAPPEARING

Every year, another traditional object disappears.

Another craft becomes rare.

Another old house is altered.

Another agricultural practice is forgotten.

Another generation grows up without knowing how their grandparents lived.

This is why museums matter.

GOA CHITRA IS NOT ONLY LOOKING BACKWARDS.

It is creating a record for the future.

Because once something disappears from everyday life, a museum may be the only place where future generations can still encounter it.

WE CANNOT PRESERVE EVERYTHING. BUT WE MUST PRESERVE WHAT TELLS US WHO WE WERE.
