We are looking for a versatile, hands-on gardener to join our team here at the Englefield Estate.

Englefield Gardens are made up mainly of a private nine-acre, nineteenth-century Italian garden, surrounded by a woodland garden. There is also a walled kitchen garden that produces a wide range of vegetables, fruit and flowers.

The successful candidate will be working closely with our experienced gardening team and should have sound horticultural knowledge.

Our Gardens team has been busy seed saving! 🌻

Over the past few weeks, the team have been focusing on harvesting seeds within the ornamental and formal gardens as they look towards the future of these spaces.

Varieties that have performed particularly well during the hot, dry summer are being selected for propagation, helping to increase our stock of resilient, climate adapted plants for the years ahead.

Potting on, moving our growing plants from a smaller container to a larger one, of both hardy perennials and annuals is also underway, ensuring a strong supply for the seasons to come!

You've heard of football matches, cricket matches and tennis matches...but have you ever heard of a ploughing match?

We welcomed the South Berkshire Agricultural Association to Mayridge Farm on the Estate for its annual ploughing match earlier this month.

The event sees the rural community come together for friendly competition where farmers and operators each plough a designated section of a field, and judges score them on the straightness, depth, and neatness of their furrows! The matches are followed by a lunch and prize giving ceremony.

Our Head of Rural Property and Land, James Meade said: "People come to compete, but they also come to see each other. The match has been part of the local farming calendar for generations and it remains one of the best opportunities in the year for the farming community to get together."

We are pleased to welcome Lucy Baker as the Estate’s new Head Gardener.

Lucy joins us from The Oratory School in Oxfordshire, where she worked as Lead Gardener, and brings together her horticultural experience with an earlier career in art and teaching.

Having visited Englefield Gardens and the village tea rooms with family on several occasions before joining the team, Lucy described the opportunity to take on the role as “quite serendipitous”.

Her early priorities include supporting soil health, establishing young trees within the gardens and considering how planting can remain resilient through periods of both prolonged drought and heavy rainfall.

We are also delighted that Lucy’s predecessor Susan Broughton will remain a valued member of the gardening team, continuing to share the knowledge and experience gained during her many years as Head Gardener.

We look forward to sharing more from Lucy and the gardens over the coming months.

Englefield Village Hall is looking for a new Treasurer, and you can hear all about the role in this short video from Livi, the outgoing volunteer who has held the post for the past two years.

The Village Hall is run entirely by volunteers, and the Treasurer plays an important part in keeping it open for the clubs, classes and community groups that use it every week.

The role involves attending committee meetings a few times a year, providing financial updates, preparing the year-end accounts and liaising with the hall's bookings coordinator on money coming in and out.

No formal financial training is needed. If you are well-organised, comfortable using a computer and would like to give a few hours back to the local community each month, the committee would love to hear from you.

Our forestry team is recruiting! 🌳

We are looking for a Forester & Estate Worker to help care for the 1,300 hectares of woodland across the Estate. It's a hands-on role, from planting and thinning to the wider estate work that keeps our woodlands healthy, productive and safe for visitors.

You'll be based at our Forestry Yard in Mortimer West End, working alongside a team that manages everything from sustainable timber production and conservation, to filming in the Estate’s woodlands.

Hello, hello, hello... Moo's this then? 🐄

These cows have been brought to the Estate this year as part of our work to introduce regenerative farming practices on the Home Farm. They are grazing on the Herbal Leys which are diverse seed mixtures containing grasses, legumes, and deep-rooting herbs which help to rebuild soil structure, fix natural nitrogen and improve livestock health.

James Meade - our Head of Rural Land and Property - said: "We are still at an early stage in our move to regenerative farming, but putting livestock on the herbal leys is an important part of the process and introduces essential nutrients into the soil. It is also good to see the cattle on the farm."

Joining in the Big Butterfly Count is one way many parents and carers will have entertained children during the summer holidays, whilst helping the Butterfly Conservation to assess the health of our environment. 🦋

Butterflies react very quickly to changes in their environment, meaning increases or falls in their numbers can signal positive or negative changes to their surroundings.

Liz, our Education and Environment Officer who so many young people will have met at our Schools Days events, carries out the Big Butterfly Count here at the Estate.

She's seen lots of Meadow Browns, Gatekeepers and Small White butterflies. In the Englefield Community Woodland and in the wildlife meadow on the drive, she's also spotted eight Common Blues, one Green-veined White, one Red Admiral and a Painted Lady.

Liz also said that there were lots of Marbled Whites earlier this year, but it's likely that they have finished flying early due to the hot weather.

Opportunities to share knowledge and engage with community groups is a key part of our work here at Englefield, so we were pleased to welcome members of Chieveley Gardening Club to Englefield House last for a gardens tour.

Our Head Gardener, Lucy Baker led the tour, highlighting how the team is promoting greater biodiversity across the gardens, focusing on young trees and how they are being maintained during the dry weather, and sharing plans for the part of the garden that is home to a 1930’s stream which is surrounded by Ghent Azaleas.

Lucy said: “Sharing gardening knowledge and tips is a joy for any horticulturalist, but it has perhaps never been more important than now, as we all try to find the best ways to look after our plants and trees during the heatwave.

“It was beneficial for us all to talk about water use, specifically rainwater collection and show the members plants in the gardens that have coped well in the heat, these include Zinnias (photographs in the pot) and Bupleurum fruticosum.”
