If only we could see who really walked in our ancient landscapes...but the romance and speculation of legend is fascinating!

⚔ King Arthur and Hadrian’s Wall
Did King Arthur ever stand on Hadrian’s Wall? Nobody can say for sure - historians still argue about whether he existed at all - but the Wall keeps turning up in the legend:
THE SLEEPING KING
Local folklore says Arthur and his knights lie asleep in a cave beneath Sewingshields Crags, near Housesteads, waiting to be woken by a bugle horn.
CASTLESTEADS & CAMLANN
The Roman fort at Castlesteads, near Brampton, was called Camboglanna, which some think could be Camlann, the battle where Arthur is said to have fallen. (Older books place Camboglanna at Birdoswald, but Castlesteads is now the accepted site.)
LIFE AFTER THE ROMANS
Excavations at Birdoswald found timber halls built after the Roman army left, so local leaders were still holding the old forts. Could Arthur have been one of them? It’s possible, but nothing yet ties him to the site by name.
CARLISLE
Medieval romances put Arthur’s court at Carlisle and nearby Arthuret is linked to Merlin. However, these tales were written centuries later and may be pure fantasy.
ARTHUR AS A ROMAN?
Lucius Artorius Castus was a real Roman officer in Britain and some believe his name inspired the legend. His dates don’t fit neatly, however, and the theory is still debated.
So the links are fascinating but unproven, built on place names, folklore and the idea that a real King Arthur, if there was one, may have fought in the north.
Can't you picture King Arthur in these wild, romantic landscapes?
