Looks like some people are going back to DVDs, MP3 players and mailing lists.

Streaming is convenient, until the thing you wanted disappears. Social media is similar. We post most days, but whether you actually see it is up to an algorithm out of our control.

A mailing list is the opposite. You sign up, and we turn up in your inbox. Super convenient.

We send a couple of emails a month…life here in Oria, what the kids have been up to, a bit of practical advice for families thinking about worldschooling, and now and then news of upcoming months, offers and early bird prices.

A little taste of Oria’s history…

Did you know that Oria is home to a traditional family bakery with a history stretching back almost 150 years?

Meet Confitería La Polaca, a family-run artisan bakery that has been making traditional Spanish sweets since 1875. Now in its sixth generation, the business is continuing to preserve recipes and traditions passed down through the family.

From roscos de viento and almond alfajores to traditional polvorones and dulces de cabello de ángel, these are the sort of treats that tell a story about the food and heritage of rural Andalucía.

And it’s not just locals enjoying them. Their sweets have travelled as far as Argentina and France, with former residents and their families ordering a little taste of home from thousands of miles away.

We love telling you about local businesses like this. There’s many! They’re part of what makes Oria a special place, and a reminder that some of the best things about village life are the traditions and people that have been here for generations.

So, when you’re staying with us at Shepherd’s Rest, why not pop into La Polaca and treat yourself to something traditionally local?

Support local. Discover Oria. Taste a little history.

Most of us were never taught how to be self-employed. Nobody sits you down and explains how to handle uncertainty or back yourself up when no one is telling you what to do. No one tells you how to work out what to do when something goes wrong.

Those are social and emotional skills, and they are rarely taught in any formal way. Yet they matter whichever direction a child goes in: starting a business, freelancing, working for someone else, studying, creating, or something that doesn’t have a name yet.

Spending a month with us, children practise them without it feeling like a lesson. They work out how to get along with people of different ages, speak up in a group, solve problems with friends and keep going when something doesn’t work the first time.

They also get to be children while they do it. There’s space, time and freedom to play, wander and try things.

A child who is confident, resilient and good with people has options. We have the ability to raise our children in a way that gives them agency over their life choices. We would rather give them that than point them down one road.
