There is nothing that says “This house was built in the ‘80s” like brass hardware. And we’re not talking beautifully patinated satin brass, we’re talking yellow-toned, lacquered brass. Shudder.

Fortunately, this is an easy fix that will bring your cabinets into the 21st century in only a few minutes.

There are many affordable hardware options, and even a novice DIYer can take this on. Look for a satin nickel or chrome finish for traditional homes, or matte black for modern ones.

Bedrooms are the epitome of a personal space, and you want to make sure it is staged to look its best. Don’t throw on a pair of wrinkled sheets and a faded duvet and call it a day.

This kitchen nails one of our favourite staging basics: keep things light and bright.

Don’t get us wrong, we love pops of colour, but when staging a home, a light and bright room gives home buyers the impression of a blank canvas. It makes it easier for them to imagine adding their own personalized touches and style, instead of trying to imagine how they’re going to paint over bright orange walls.

Walk through each room and make sure there is sufficient lighting for the task that takes place in each room. Do workspaces need a lamp? Is it time to replace the single bulb sconce in the bathroom?

Lighting is a great way to infuse style into a room as well. Avoid installing statement pieces if you are staging to sell; instead, choose classic finishes with clean lines to appeal to many buyers.

This neutral bedroom was staged so that potential buyers could appreciate how spacious it was.

Part of the staging process is about using items of the proper scale. The rug under the bed expands beyond its edges evenly on each side, and the bedside tables are large enough to hold a pair of tall lamps.

Using furniture that is too big or small for a space will throw off its proportions and can make it feel awkward or cramped.
