Did you know Calgary's name has roots all the way across the Atlantic? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇨🇦

​Long before it became a bustling Canadian city, the name traveled from a small bay and castle on the Isle of Mull in the Scottish Hebrides. In 1876, Colonel James Macleod of the North-West Mounted Police officially proposed renaming the local fort "Calgary," inspired by his wonderful summer memories visiting Calgary Castle in Scotland.

​While Macleod believed the Gaelic name Cala-ghearridh meant "clear running water" (fitting for a fort built where two rivers meet!), it most commonly translates to "pasture by the bay" or "beach of the meadow."

​Long before European settlers arrived, this land was and always has been home to Indigenous peoples who named it after its iconic geography:

• Mohkínstsis (Blackfoot): "Elbow," describing the sharp bend where the Elbow River meets the Bow River.

• Wincheesh-pah (Stoney Nakoda): Also meaning "elbow."

• Guts-ists-i (Tsuut'ina): Similarly translating to "elbow."
